“Disillusioned”, which was released on January 1st, 2018, is the 2nd single from the supergroup’s upcoming album. It will be their 1st album since 2004’s eMOTIVe (which was an album of anti-war cover songs).
Concerning the bands previous single, “The Doomed”, the band’s lead singer, Maynard James Keenan made the following statement: “In light of this current difficult and polarized social, spiritual and political climate, we artist types need to open our big mouths and share the light a little louder.” “Disillusioned” continues in that vein. The song provides pointed commentary on society’s obsession with materialism and social media. It also links that obsession with becoming disillusioned (“We’ve become disillusioned / So we dive like crows towards anything glittering”).
The song encourages listeners to periodically disconnect from their devices and instead try to connect to the people around them. By doing so there is hope that by “tuning into each other” we will be able to “lift all higher”. By escaping the echo chamber and engaging in meaningful dialogue with those with differing views, it can become a catalyst to lasting change.
