One of the Best Original Song nominees at the 90th Academy Awards was “Stand Up For Something” from the 2017 film Marshall. The song was composed by Diane Warren and Common.
The movie Marshall is a biopic dealing with the early legal career of Thurgood Marshall, who ended up becoming the first African-American Supreme Court Justice. Prior to that barrier breaking achievement, Marshall was a NAACP lawyer who defended fellow black citizens who were victims of racial injustices.
Andra Day and Common performed a stirring rendition of the song on March 4th, 2018 during the Oscars telecast. Common added some additional verses to reflect current political realities such as the recent Parkland school shooting and the ongoing plight faced by the hurricane ravaged Puerto Rico. Day and Common were also joined on stage by ten different activists.
