There are many musicians who use their music to promote social awareness, but they are musicians firsts and activist second. Redbait are a bit different because they started out in St. Louis as activists and organizers. Activism came first and the music second. That being said, their brand of hardcore becomes an effective medium for promoting social justice.
On the band’s website bio it states: “Sure, RedBait can play your show…but they can also negotiate a union contract, set up a 501c3, introduce you to elected officials, cook for 100 under budget, and change your mind. RedBait stands with workers, animals, and the environment.”
“We Refuse” is off of their 2018 debut EP Red Tape. It is a rousing anti-conformity anthem which also contains strong sentiments of women empowerment. The tune concludes with the potent lyrics:
“We will not be silent
We will compete
We are stronger than you think
We refuse
Side with the patriarchy and you will lose
Submission can be refused and we refuse.”
