Singer-songwriter Amos Lee just released a deluxe version of his recent album My New Moon. The deluxe edition features seven new tracks including a strip down acoustic reworking of Marvin Gaye’s 1971 socially conscious soul classic “What Going On”.
Even though Lee takes some liberties with the music arrangement, he stays true to the spirit of the tune. Lee has the proper amount of soul and just like the original his version is a mournful and urgent questioning of world events.
Lee made the following statement about his cover to NPR’s World Cafe:
“What’s Going On” has always been one of my favorite songs. It’s universal, timeless, poignant, powerful, and lyrically perfect. It embodies the story of struggle and strength as well as anything ever written. As long as we live through troubled times, this song will remain an American standard and a place of refuge for those who seek solace in song.”
