The events of late 2016 and the aftermath of the US elections help create a fertile breeding ground for protest music. Veteran musician Marc Ribot is one of many examples of artists who were motivated to create music based on the current political climate. His new album, Songs of Resistance 1942–2018 is due out September 14, 2018.
“I am alarmed by Trump and the movement he’s part of,” Ribot said in a press statement. “I’ve spent a good chunk of my life running around the world on tour—I’m kind of an accidental internationalist—and I see that he’s not an isolated phenomenon. And if we don’t deal with what is going on, it is going to deal with us.”
The second single from the album is “The Militant Ecologist.” The tune is a reworking of the famous 1943 Italian resistance song “Fischia il Vento.” It features haunting vocals from Meshell Ndegeocello.
The song was originally written in response to Italian resistance groups that opposed Nazi Germany and Italian Fascists. Ribot is now re-purposing the tune to apply to modern activists that are currently resisting regressive hateful rhetoric.
Previously featured the first single, “Srinivas” as a Daily Dose of Protest
