“Have you heard it on the news
About this fascist groove thang?
Evil men with racist views
Spreadin’ all across the land
Don’t just sit there on your ass
Unlock that funky chaindance
Brothers, sisters, shoot your best
We don’t need this fascist groove thang”
The following lyrics are from the 1981 tune by British synth-pop band Heaven 17. This anti-fascist and anti-racist anthem took direct aim at both then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and the then recently elected US President Ronald Reagan.
The song recently received a reworking by American dance-punk band LCD Soundsystem. It appears on their upcoming Electric Lady Sessions, which is due out late 2018. It features lead vocals from singer-keyboardist Nancy Whang.
The lyrics already resonated in the current political climate, but they also updated the lyrics by changing “Reagan’s president-elect” to “the orange one is president.” This transforms the tune into a modern-day resistance anthem against the Trump administration.
